Environmental Enrichment for the jaguar (Panthera onca): a basic tool to ensure its welfare in captivity

September 2010

Animals in captivity are limited in their repertoire of behaviors, which is due in large part to the lack of stimulation. To encourage the development of natural behaviors and reduce or avoid unwanted or stereotyped behaviors is of great importance to the implementation of an environmental enrichment program.

In this paper, the author turns her personal experience gained as a volunteer in the Environmental Enrichment area at the Buenos Aires Zoo during the period from December 8, 2004 to April 10, 2007, working with the species Panthera onca or Jaguar.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the process of implementing an environmental enrichment program in felines in general, expecting to be useful for people dedicated to the care and welfare of animals in captivity.
