Aware of the current critical situation of Jaguar
(Panthera onca) wild populations in
Argentina and the potential contribution to
improve that is in ex situ conservation, where
zoos play an impoetant role, the Red Yaguareté
(Jaguar Network) approaches them in order to
coordinate joint works designed to achieve goals
regarding the preservation, welfare and management
of the species, as well as in education and
training.
Zoos play an important role in society through
education in natural resources conservation among
the visiting public. This is where captive
specimens can begin to play the role of "ambassadors"
for their wild relatives, contribute in the
appreciation of the species among the population
and generating awareness about the present
situation of the species in their natural
environment.
Also, the captive population management is
important for the conservation of the species in
the country. The optimization of the management
and welfare in captivity supported with in situ
information will allow to develop solid programs
with individuals containing adequate genetic
diversity for possible reinforcement of wild
populations in areas where they are critically
handicapped or extinct.
Currently, the Red Yaguareté has knowledge of 45
Yaguareté in different establishments of the
country.
This program seeks a new
meaning for the existence
of these beautiful Jaguars in captivity.
The PReMYCA comprises the following subprogrammes:
- Subprogramme Argentine Stud Book.
- Subprogramme Animal Welfare.
- Subprogramme Education and Outreach.
- Subprogramme Genetic Management.
